You Wouldn't 'Download' a Board Game

While looking around at different board games I stumbled upon this game called “Hive”. The game does not use a board, but pieces only. I soon realized that this game is perfect for a 3D printing project. So I went and found that the STL files including the expansions have already been made.

3D Printing “Hive” The Board Game

The STL for the pieces here. Thanks to Gigbrinus for providing the STL files.

The original STL files prints the Standard game size. But I wanted the Pocket version so I used the following scalings:

  • x = 25.28mm (62.11%)
  • y = 27.4769mm (62.11%)
  • z = 10.1 mm

Below are the pieces you need to print for one side, you need to print another set of these in a different color for the full game:

  • Regular
    • 1x Bee
    • 2x Beetle
    • 2x Spider
    • 3x Ant
    • 3x Grasshopper
  • Expansion
    • 1x Mosquito
    • 1x Pillbug
    • 1x Ladybug

Cost

If you print with 100% infill and are using the Pocket size scaling then each piece will cost about 7g and takes about 37min. For all 28 pieces it will take a total of about 200g of filament and 17.5 hours of print time.

The original Hive Pocket with the Pill Bug Expansion will cost you about $54. I got 1 Kg of white PLA and 1 Kg of black PLA filaments for $40. So 200g of filaments will costs around $4 dollars with 17.5 hours of print time. I also took about 7 hours sanding the pieces but it’s not required.
