Mark 8:11-13

Are they wrong in asking for a sign?

What do you think was their intention? In testing Jesus

What is this sign from heaven that they are looking for?

How does Jesus respond and why does He respond the way He does?

Is a sign a miracle? A confirmation that He is from God?

What about all the miracles that He has already done?

Section 1

Jesus just left?

To demand for a "sign" is an attempt to gain something from logic and evidence what can only be gained by faith and trust.

To force evidence onto someone is to make genuine faith impossible.

  • Create an illustration for this?

How are the Pharisees like the Israelites in the wilderness?

What is ironic about this and the faithful Gentiles that we have in the previous stories?

Does being able to do miracles proof someone is from God?

[!bible] Deuteronomy 32:20 - ESV 20 And he said, ‘I will hide my face from them; I will see what their end will be, for they are a perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.

[!bible] Psalm 95:10-11 - ESV 10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.” 11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.”

[!bible] Exodus 33:5 - ESV 5 For the LORD had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’”

So far in the story, Jesus's public ministry show cased his authority. The pharisee came to challenge that.

In the following section will transition us into the next section of Mark.

In which will focus on Jesus' private ministry to the disciples. He explains to them what does it mean for Jesus to be the Messiah.

Intro

Mark 8:11-13

The Pharisees came to oppose Jesus. Seeking a sign to disproof His authority as someone from Heaven. Jesus instead of answering them is dismayed at their unfaithfulness and left.

He then left. 1) as a transition of travel between area. But it's also symbolic of Jesus parting ways with the Pharisees. From engaging with the Pharisees

Some people are just hostile to the Gospel and they aren't genuinely questioning the authenticity of the faith.

  • The Pharisees turns and walk away; the disciples follows Jesus into the boat.
  • "faith comes when one steps into the boat with Jesus and does not prefer to remain in safety on the shore" - Eduard Schweizer

[!bible] Ephesians 2:13-14 - ESV 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility

[!bible] Mark 8:3 - ESV 3 And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.”
