What do I want to say?
- What is Pride and the faces of Pride
- Application
- Personal experience
- How to fight pride
- Exhortation
What is Pride?
-
Over exaltation of self
-
Thinking you are better than everyone else
Looking down on others Dismissing others
Believing that you are better than you actually are
Thinking that you can do well without God, and without others
How this is uniquely a Christian virtue
Not self help, but Christ-help?
Think of others more than yourself (Philippians 2:2)
Look to Christ More than Yourself (John 3:30)
Over-degredation(?) of self
Thinking less of yourself
Solution?
Unhealthy obsession of self
- What do I mean by unhealthy?
- What about self care? Should we do some level of that?
- What about "Love others as yourself", doesn't that command us to at least love ourselves (and by extension think of ourselves?)
Example
Looking to Christ as Faith
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrew 12:1-2
Fear of what others think about You
Thinking that you are better than others
Overthinking?
Overthinking is lack of faith. If you're trust is in your circumstances/yourself ofcourse you will be worried.
But God says to look to Christ, keep your eyes on me
Peter in the storm.
Somewhat of a part to "it's all in my head"
- Timidness and self-doubt
Being Called to Serve (Moses)
Receiving Compliments
Not wrong to be praises (if you have please the right person)
- Who is someone wrong to be pleased? (Wicked and sinners)
- Who should you please?
- Parents, God, fellowship believers
Are you simply just glad that others are pleased by you?
Is your identity dependant on the praise of others?
